VW Karmann Ghia by Gunze

Hi all !

Right now I've just finished a build of a Renault 5 in "lowrider-style" so I had to dig into my stash and find something to build after the R5's been completed. I Realized that I still haven't built a Ghia, so that's it then....A Ghia it'll be !

I had a few to choose from but decided to build one of my Gunze Ghias. I will also incorporate some parts from an old PMC Promo to update it and make "lowlight Ghia" (meaning a pre 1960
Ghia).








The car itself will be built in a pretty modern way with 22" wheels and comfortable sports seats.







That's it for now. Gotta finish my Renault before proceeding on this one, stay tuned....

Yes, I'm sure..... I have another one which is better and not so damaged. This one has a big crack all over it's roof

I've done som more work to the Promo before cutting it apart:

This morning I started doing the chassie and suspension. Also adding Pegasus 19" disc breaks to the modern wheels I'm using.



The front axle/suspension has been modified and lowered.

Good start !

Here's a few pics of the work I've done during the last 24h:

Modified the stock rear wheel hubs as well this evening so they can be incorporated with the new disc breaks.

The new front has been glues to the body and I have also made new shocks both front and rear:

Modifying the engine dummy and chassies plate to look better and accept the lowered rear suspension:

Thanks! It'll take a lot of work to get the seams smooth and I also will have to scratchbuild the taillights as the ones on the Promo don't look good enough.

Worked almost 2 hours on my Ghia this morning before going to work:

Roof glued to body and both A-pillars repaired:

Quite a lot of work to smoothen the joints where the roof meets the A-pillars:

Time to fill the recessed areas for the taillights as I will scratchbuild the new ones which will be correct for a "lowlight" Ghia.

Indeed, very strange. The Tamiya would be easier to build, but I kind of liked the idea to see if the Gunze Ghia really is buildable ?

The recessed areas for the stock taillights have been filled and sanded to the right shape:



I also had to add some material to the front valance as it wasn't "high" enough after the modifications:
